Gas Leaks In The Home - Luton
Initial Detection
If you think that you have a serious smell of gas in your home, or nearby, you should call the National Grid's Gas Emergency Contact Centre, in the first instance on 0800 111 999.
They will instruct you to do the following:
- Turn off the gas supply at the meter, using the emergency control valve that you find there. If there is a smell of gas in a basement they will advise immediate evacuation - since gas will stay trapped down there.
- Extinguish all naked flames.
- Do not operate electrical switches.
- Open windows and doors.
If the emergency contact centre establishes that the leak might be in your home they will send out an engineer to make the premises safe. In practical terms this means that if the visiting engineer cannot supply a simple solution within 30 minutes they will cap off your gas supply and tell you to contact a Gas Safe registered company, such as ours.
The National Grid only takes responsibility for the gas (fixes problems) up to the point where it reaches your meter. Downstream of the meter (house side) you need to speak to the likes of ourselves. That is, gas engineers who are registered to work with domestic gas pipework and appliances.
Small Gas Leaks
Leaks should never occur in the pipes inside your house and if they do they need immediate attention. However, it is not uncommon for control valves on cookers, for instance, to leak tiny amounts of gas after a while, as the valves begin to wear.
People will often begin to notice faint traces of gas in certain areas in the house; near the cooker, or under the stairs where the gas meter is, for instance. These symptoms might progress as time goes on. Do not ignore them, this is gas!
SafeSure Plumbing And Heating employs skilled and experienced Gas Safe registered engineers. Gas Safe registered engineers are trained and equipped to detect the smallest of leaks (finding them can sometimes be a bit harder).
